Experience the Food, Architecture and History of East Berlin

We start this East Berlin walking tour at the former heart of the GDR, the Weltzeituhr or World Time Clock on Alexanderplatz. We’ll see East Berlin’s showpiece buildings, including the iconic TV tower. As we continue on foot to Karl Marx Allee, the GDR’s Champs-Élysées, I’ll explain the history of the GDR – how it came to be, how it functioned and how it disintegrated with the fall of the Berlin Wall.

You’ll be getting hungry as we visit the key sights of Cafe Moskau, Kino International and Strausberger Platz, before stopping by the Ostel, a hotel where the German Democratic Republic lives on. After a typical Ossi drink in its cafe, you have the choice to: a) continue via public transport to a hidden spot where East German architecture remains untouched or b) continue with a trip to a store that sells the vanished products of a land no longer in existence.

For an even more in depth look at Berlin’s architecture my book on The GDR architecture of East Berlin is available on Amazon!
